Background of the Study

Dance therapy, also known as movement therapy, has been recognized as an effective treatment for mental health conditions, including depression. It involves the use of movement and body expression to improve emotional, psychological, and physical health. Adolescents, particularly those suffering from depression, may find this form of therapy beneficial as it allows for non-verbal emotional expression. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of dance therapy in treating depression among adolescents at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Benin City.

Statement of the Problem

Depression in adolescents is a growing concern in Nigeria, and while various therapeutic interventions are available, dance therapy remains an under-researched approach in the treatment of adolescent depression. This study will explore whether dance therapy can be an effective method for alleviating depressive symptoms among adolescents at the hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of dance therapy in treating depression among adolescents at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Benin City.
  2. To examine the impact of dance therapy on the emotional and psychological well-being of adolescents.
  3. To explore the perceptions of both patients and therapists regarding dance therapy as a treatment modality.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is dance therapy in treating depression among adolescents at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Benin City?
  2. What impact does dance therapy have on the emotional and psychological well-being of adolescents?
  3. What are the perceptions of adolescents and therapists regarding dance therapy?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Dance therapy does not significantly reduce depressive symptoms in adolescents at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Benin City.
  2. Dance therapy does not have a significant positive impact on the emotional and psychological well-being of adolescents.
  3. There is no significant difference in the perceptions of patients and therapists about the effectiveness of dance therapy.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adolescents diagnosed with depression at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Benin City, who participate in dance therapy sessions. Limitations include the small sample size and the subjective nature of self-reported emotional well-being.
